In 1991, Stazioni Marittime S.p.A. carried out radical modernisation work on the passenger structures
of the Ponte dei Mille Maritime Station, a historical building dating back to 1930 which had always been used
for passenger traffic.
Inside the building, an advanced Cruise Terminal has been created.
In addition to meeting the highest level of operational and quality standards, it is equipped with a wide range
of services and up-to-date technology to guarantee high levels of safety and comfort.
It is forging ahead of its time and anticipating the needs of the cruise ship companies that, in a few years time,
will have discovered in the Mediterranean an important docking area,
making it an increasingly important reference market.
The Passenger Terminal consists of three floors connected by escalators and lifts.
The recent enlargements and refurbishments mean that the total floor area is now about 10,000 square metres.
Internally it has large customs halls for the disembarkation of passengers with the use of luggage trolleys,
suitably equipped check-in areas, police and customs posts, a duty free shop and various waiting-rooms
with music and video transmissions, internet points and other facilities.
The large and interesting embarkation areas are equipped with electromechanical moving walkways
that connect to the ships.
The Ponte dei Mille maritime station building accommodates various businesses and services,
including a bank, a post office, three restaurants, two tobacco shops, a newspaper stand and other services.
In 2001
the Terminal was further enlarged by about 3,500 square metres with the restoration
of the fascinating historic embarkation halls for first and second class passengers.
Equipped with every kind of comfort just has in the past, these aeras are used as waiting
and transit rooms for passengers.
The Terminal can accommodate, at its three recently restructured and enlarged berths,
two of the latest generation cruise ships and one cruise ship of smaller size,
handling a total of up to 10,000 passengers a day.
